Updating your will

It is vital to review your will regularly to make sure it is up to date with your current circumstances. Your will needs to reflect changes in your life to remain relevant to your wishes.

Generally you should review your will every time a 'life event' happens. For example:

- You marry
- You have children/grandchildren
- There is a death in the family

- There is a change in your financial circumstances
- There are major changes in the types or rate of taxation
- You are going to live abroad

- You are moving to shared accommodation
- You separate or divorce from your partner

We would always advise anyone making or updating a will to get in touch with a practising solicitor to help you do this. Keeping your will current is just as important as making one in the first place, as it really is the only way to ensure that what you leave behind is distributed in exactly the way you want it to be.
